Endless Nights In St. Maarten/St. Martin

By Puja Chugani

If you're looking for an island with the perfect blend of daytime and nighttime activities, look no further. St. Maarten/St. Martin's nightlife scene really offers something for everyone—whether you want to party at the hottest nightclubs, hit the slots at a casino or prefer a low-key night at a lounge or beach bar.

Unlike other places where the action seems to slow down with nightfall, St. Maarten/St. Martin is known for its dynamic nightlife scene, which draws visitors from all over the world.

The Boardwalk along Great Bay Beach in Philipsburg has become a hot spot in its own right. Every Friday, there's live music. Join the many locals and tourists taking a stroll, or pop into one of the restaurants lining The Boardwalk for dinner or drinks and soak in the ambience. Oualichi Beach Bar & Restaurant is a popular one, or try Taloula Mango's, where a DJ plays music every Friday during happy hour.

One of the newer restaurants on The Boardwalk is the recently renovated Ocean Lounge Restaurant in the Holland House hotel. The chic and stylish decor evokes a St. Tropez atmosphere, and the views of the ocean are incredible. Enjoy a drink or dinner from their eclectic and inspired menu.

The Greenhouse has long been a local favorite for its nightly specials. There are special offers every day, like Margarita Monday, Crabaganza Wednesday, Prime Rib Thursday and Lobster Mania Friday—but by far the most popular is the two-for-one drinks special on Tuesday nights. The open-air restaurant is conveniently located and offers good food at reasonable prices, and a place to relax after a long day of shopping in Philipsburg. Enjoy drinks at the bar and the DJ's music or a game of pool.

Lee's Roadhouse in Simpson Bay also offers lively entertainment most nights of the week, accompanied by some of the best local food offerings.

The Maho area is the premier party destination in St. Maarten/St. Martin, thanks to the number of clubs, bars, lounges and casinos. Sopranos Bar is one of Maho's hot spots. Located on the first floor of the Sonesta Maho building, the stylish piano bar features nightly live performances by renowned pianists. New talent is introduced often, for constantly changing and lively performances. Come to this piano bar inspired by the hit TV show to enjoy a drink while listening to international piano players and local jazz artists.

Another popular Maho nightspot is Bliss, located inside The Caravanserai Beach Resort. Part nightclub, part lounge and part restaurant, Bliss is one of the most popular nightspots in St. Maarten. Enjoy a meal in the open-air dining room or have a drink at one of the two bars. If you want to experience dancing under the stars to the incredible DJ's international beats, then this is the place for you. Bliss offers two-for-one drinks on Thursday nights, and it's an "in" spot any night of the week. Call ahead to reserve the VIP tables complete with bottle service in the private cabanas around the pool.

For a more touristy but fun experience, try Cheri's Cafe in Maho. Its vibrant decor, live music and nightly entertainment are part of the reason it's such an attraction in St. Maarten/St. Martin. Save a little time after dinner to walk around the shops in Maho for some late-night shopping.

Sunset Beach Bar, also located next to The Caravanserai Beach Resort, is an ideal place for a drink (or two or three) without any attitude. Enjoy the happy hours and watch the planes flying overhead as they land or take off from Princess Juliana International Airport next door.

For an even more laid-back island experience, head to Boo Boo Jam or Kontiki on the Orient Beach strip on the French side. Boo Boo Jam gets busy around midnight on Fridays and Sundays, and features favorite local music styles like zouk. For a happening Sunday afternoon option, head to Kontiki beach bar and restaurant. DJs spin the latest tunes, and patrons are encouraged to laze or dance on the deck and beach outside.

If you're lucky enough to be in St. Maarten/St. Martin during Carnival season (April 15-May 5), stop by Festival Village in Philipsburg for food stands and live concerts.

Casinos are a great way to start or end your night, and the island's casinos offer everything from Antillean poker to roulette. And thanks to the many casinos located all over the Dutch side, chances are you'll never be too far away from that blackjack table. Casino Royale in Maho is conveniently located near some of the island's most popular nightspots, like Sopranos, Cheri's Cafe and Bliss.

In the Pelican Resort in Simpson Bay, Hollywood Casino has something for everyone. In addition to poker, roulette and slot machines, the casino also offers bingo and a great sports book with nine screens, where you can sit back and watch daily sporting events and horse races.

Atlantis World Casino in Cupecoy is a great option because of its proximity to the restaurants in Cupecoy and Atlantis. Enjoy a sumptuous dinner and then head to the casino for some action on the slots or check out the popular poker room.

And for after-hours adult entertainment, go to The Platinum Room in Maho Beach Resort. The Platinum Room hosts some of the most exotic dancers from all over the world, with a stage surrounding the swimming pool for a sophisticated atmosphere fueled by great people, good music and delicious drinks—an ideal place to end your night out. l
