Indulge & Revitalize: The Art Of Spa

By Pat Cantor

More than 4,000 years ago, the Babylonians were among the first of the ancients to realize the medical and spiritual benefits of spa treatments. The concept of using water as ritual purification honored their pantheon of gods and goddesses and was thought to cleanse the body of sin.

After a couple of days in St. Maarten/St. Martin sitting in the sun, enjoying lots of refreshing beverages and glorious food, it might be a good idea to be cleansed of your sins by visiting one of the island's fabulous spas!

The Good Life Spa (599-545-2540) is one of the leading facilities in the Caribbean, and has been voted St. Maarten/St. Martin's No. 1 spa for the past five years.

Serene music in the background, friendly staff and an awe-inspiring décor all contribute to the peaceful ambience that the Good Life Spa is so well known for. The spa's design aims to integrate all the elements of nature through the use of color, plants, music, lighting and aromatherapy. While the spa's design is Moroccan-inspired, each treatment room has its own special feeling and ambiance.

The long list of spa services includes several types of massages, body and beauty treatments that guests can enjoy in this luxurious haven of relaxation, receiving the rejuvenation they seek and deserve during their stay on the island.

Clients can choose one of the classic massage therapies such as a Swedish massage, deep tissue or a hot stone massage. Or try the spa's famous couples massage where you lay side-by-side in a romantic room. After the massage, you spend time together relaxing in a couple's waiting room adjacent to the massage room.

Also available are transformational energy sessions, body readings and adjustments. The large assortment of body and beauty treatments includes body scrubs, body wraps and seaweed wraps, personalized facials, manicures, pedicures and waxing. Guests can also enjoy special spa packages offered at a discounted rate. The spa caters to both individuals and to groups, such as wedding parties. It also includes a full-service fitness center and a fully stocked retail store where you will find all products used during treatments. Prior to their treatments, guests can use the complimentary dry sauna or while waiting, they can use the fully equipped gym, which is complimentary for all clients. St. Maarten/St. Martin's spas take a sophisticated, intelligent and often healing approach to the beauty/spa concept. From deep tissue massage to the very best haircut, you walk out of a St. Maarten/St. Martin beauty/spa facility feeling fabulous inside and out.

Marc Van Thielen and his massage therapists at L'Aqualigne see massage as a complete experience combining physical relaxation and well-being with a spiritual and mental cleansing. For Van Thielen, massage stems from a natural reflex people and animals use for a variety of reasons. A new mother is guided by her feelings of love as she touches her child. In the animal world, the mother licks her newborn to stimulate blood circulation and bond with her infant. Lovers express their feelings by caressing, and often when you hurt yourself, you automatically "massage" the wound to make it feel better. We all communicate with touch and feel. And so it is with an intuitive therapist who combines massage techniques and manipulations with the ability to use "touch" to feel all the information inside you, bringing you to a state of utter relaxation and well-being.

What is established is a very trusting relationship. In order to adjust to the magnetic field of the patient who is seeking relaxation, the therapist must become a partner with the client. When this is achieved, the massage becomes an "out of body" experience and creates a sense of deep well-being.

At L'Aqualigne, the massage therapist begins by selecting soft music that relaxes the mind. Beginning with the feet and legs, deep kneading stimulates blood circulation and warms the muscles, thereby eliminating toxins from the body. With fingertips and thumbs, the therapist adds pressure, moving over the body's meridians to release tensions and restore harmony. Next is the torso, followed by the body's crown, the head. At this stage the person's heartbeat has slowed and respiration is slow and deep. The therapist gently turns the client and begins on the back.

A lot of attention is concentrated on the back, especially the spine, which is the body's "stem" and houses major nerves. A concentrated effort is given between the neck and shoulders, where most of the body's stress is stored. By concentrating on that spot, the energy channels are freed and and harmony is restored. Such is L'Aqualigne's beautifully restorative and totally relaxing massage experience. For you, L'Aqualigne is a warm stepping stone on the path called life — a place to restore your disturbed energies and give yourself the individual attention that makes it easier to continue in the right direction. Designed and created in 1985 by Belgian-born cosmetologist Marc Van Thielen, L'Aqualigne has a wide range of services to help the body and mind relax. He believes a good therapist has all the techniques and experiences in his repertoire and uses his ability to adapt to every individual client's needs and objectives. For Van Thielen, beauty, health, happiness and well-being are internally connected. His team of therapists, some of whom have been with him for 21 years, are all trained in his same spirit and philosophy. Call 599-544-2426 for an appointment. Located in the Pelican Resort.

One such facility is Marie-Antoinette Coiffure, Hairlusions, Body by Bonny Louise. This talented and dynamic team has salons in three convenient locations. The main shop is on Airport Boulevard, and there are two satellite salons, one at the Wyndham Sapphire Beach Club in the Dutch Lowlands and a new facility at the Princess Juliana International Airport. The PJIA location, a beauty salon and express spa, is the perfect solution for busy travelers who want to look and feel their best whether they are coming or going. The facility is a full-service salon offering barber services, hair styling, facials, massage, pedicure/manicure and more. And for the busy traveler who wants to grab a shower and freshen up, the salon offers the only such facility in or around the airport.

No matter which location you choose, you'll be indulged by their highly service-oriented staff. They are devoted to pampering you, from a fragrant cup of their freshly brewed coffee to an extensive range of beauty/spa services for the hair, body, hands and feet. Once you've been there, you'll understand why the Queen of The Netherlands uses Marie-Antoinette as her personal stylist while in the Caribbean. She approaches hair color with the eye of a fine artiste and her haircuts with the eye of a sculptor. The result is a style and color to suit you as an individual. Devoted clients fly in to the island just to have her do their cut and color.

The salon also offers many exclusive products and services such as the Carole Franck line of fine treatments used in all facials. This fabulous collection really does make an amazing difference for all skin types, particularly for mature skin. A facial using Carole Franck products is like a non-invasive "face lift." The newest treatment for the body is the Biolite system for Cellulite Control that slims, tones and firms cellulite prone areas and aids in circulation.

If you are planning an island wedding, Marie-Antoinette provides bridal beauty and hair services sensitive to the bride's needs, and a great massage for the stressed-out groom! For an appointment, please call: Princess Juliana International Airport location 599-546-7772; Airport Blvd. location 599-545-4090; or Wyndham Sapphire Beach Club 599-545-2179 ext. 583 or e-mail marie_antoinette@caribserve.net.
